![]() ![]() I’ve been testing out DroneMobile for the past couple of months, and I have to say – it rules, and I wish I had this on my car when I originally bought it. It’s essentially like a Swiss Army knife for your car. Oh, I forgot to mention, all of this can be controlled from either your smartphone or an Apple Watch. You get a remote car start, a souped-up alarm system, and some interesting tracking and geofencing features. įor starters, yes, DroneMobile is a remote car starter, but it’s packed with a whole lot of other useful features. Well, that day is here, and it’s bundled in a new system called DroneMobile. But to be fair, remote car starters have been around for a while, and it’s time they got the upgrade they fully deserve. It’s honestly the best part about having a remote starter on your car. This is especially clutch for people who live in cold or hot regions and want to get their car at least somewhat comfortable before braving the elements. For those of you who never had to think about a remote starter (and count your blessings that you never have to), these are basically devices that allow you to start your car anywhere within 500 to 3,000 feet. This is where a remote car starter comes into play. If you own a car in this great state, in most cases, you have to battle these elements to start your car. And that’s not to mention some gnarly wind gusts and snow squalls, as well. Maybe one day they’ll feel the same about their sought-after wearable.Living in Massachusetts in the winter is no joke. These days Apple is marketing the iPad as the only computer you’ll ever need. Most people may not remember this, but you had to connect the iPad to either a Mac or PC to even get it going. However, the same was true for the iPad when it first launched. Right now Apple clearly sees their Watch as a companion device, not a standalone product. Many of whom may not be iPhone aficionados. ![]() Its design, material options and overall package make it interesting to a wide range of people. The Apple Watch has some truly powerful hardware inside it for a smartwatch. So with no external connection, the Apple Watch still makes for a decent fitness tracker and music player, but not much else. Health apps for heart rate, activity, etc.Time-related stuff like alarms and the stopwatch (obviously!).Photos and other content synced from your phone.When it’s just you and your Watch, there are still some things you can do despite having no connection to the outside world: What you can do with no iPhone and no internet Use any apps that need an internet connection.What you can do with no iPhone but with internetĪssuming your watch has an internet connection but isn’t connected to your iPhone, there are still quite a few things you can do with it: Which means, while it isn’t independent, the cellular model is the most independent version of the watch at the time of writing. If your phone isn’t available, it can fall back to WiFi, which means you need to be in range of a known network.Ĭellular versions of the Apple Watch can operate in this mode wherever you have signal from your carrier. Which is very power-efficient and will produce the best battery life for your watch. Usually it will get the information it needs from your iPhone via Bluetooth. The cellular Apple Watch is the most independent modelĪll Apple Watch models have wireless communication ability. The Apple Watch set up process depends on an iPhone, so there’s no way of getting around this. So you can’t use its app on an iPad, Apple TV, or iPod touch. ![]() Not for iOS, but the iPhone specifically. The Apple Watch is designed as a companion device for the iPhone. You need an iPhone to set up your Apple Watch However, there’s a little more meat to this third interpretation than just a plain answer can provide. Can you use an Apple Watch as an independent device, without an iPhone or any sort of companion device? The answer to this is no. The one that’s most likely why you’d ask this question. Which brings us to the third interpretation. The watch has its own hardware and is actually a fully-fledged smart device in its own right. The answer to this is yes, Apple Watch will continue to work just fine if you leave your iPhone somewhere and walk away. The next interpretation is whether you can use your Apple watch away from your iPhone. I wrote an article about this here, but the short answer is no. One interpretation of this is using an Apple Watch with a non-iOS phone. First, let’s be clear about what we mean by using an Apple watch “without” an iPhone. ![]()
